The Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield

The Hepworth Wakefield is Yorkshire's inspiring new £35m art gallery, celebrating the area's unique artistic legacy and exploring the work of major contemporary artists. Designed by David Chipperfield Architects, the ten superb gallery spaces make this one of the UK's largest purpose-built galleries outside London.

Pontefract Racecourse

Pontefract Racecourse is the longest continuous circuit in Europe at 2m and 125yds. It stages flat racing between April and October. It is a left handed course with a home straight of just over 2 furlongs.

Diggerland, Castleford (fantastic for children)

At Diggerland Yorkshire, adults and children of at least 90cms in height can ride and drive real construction machines, under the guidance of trained staff. No driving licence required!

National Trust Nostell Priory (18th Century Mansion)

Built on the site of a medieval priory, Nostell has been the home of the Winn family for 300 years. Commissioned by Sir Rowland Winn in 1733, James Paine built the house. Later additions by Robert Adam created exceptional interiors. Visitors can explore the large park with a range of walks and views. Gardens include lakeside walks, a newly planted orchard, vegetable beds and an adventure playground. Inside the house, see a collection of Chippendale furniture made specially for Nostell.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield (world wide appeal)

An international centre for modern and contemporary art, and the country's first permanent sculpture park, set in over 500 acres of the 18th century-designed Bretton Estate.

National Coal Mining Museum, Wakefield

Provides a unique opportunity to travel 140 metres underground down one of Britain's oldest working mines.
