THINGS TO DO IN WAKEFIELD

There is so much to do in Wakefield including shopping, museums, historic sites and activities for all the family

The Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield

The Hepworth Wakefield art gallery in West Yorkshire has been named winner of the world’s biggest museum prize after a year of “breathtaking” exhibitions, booming visitor numbers and the creation of an important award for contemporary sculpture. Designed by David Chipperfield Architects, the ten superb gallery spaces make this one of the UK's largest purpose-built galleries outside London.

Pontefract Racecourse

Pontefract Racecourse is the longest continuous circuit in Europe at 2m and 125yds. It stages flat racing between April and October. It is a left handed course with a home straight of just over 2 furlongs.

At Diggerland Yorkshire, adults and children of at least 90cms in height can ride and drive real construction machines, under the guidance of trained staff. No driving licence required!

National Trust Nostell Priory (18th Century Mansion)

Built on the site of a medieval priory, Nostell has been the home of the Winn family for 300 years. Commissioned by Sir Rowland Winn in 1733, James Paine built the house. Later additions by Robert Adam created exceptional interiors. Visitors can explore the large park with a range of walks and views. Gardens include lakeside walks, a newly planted orchard, vegetable beds and an adventure playground. Inside the house, see a collection of Chippendale furniture made specially for Nostell.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield (world wide appeal)

An international centre for modern and contemporary art, and the country's first permanent sculpture park, set in over 500 acres of the 18th century-designed Bretton Estate.
